In the U.S., we currently get the overwhelming majority of our electrical power from coal-burning power plants. In other words, every time we turn on a light or use an appliance, coal is being consumed in order to produce that power. And burning coal causes a host of environmental problems, including global warming, smog, and acid rain.Solar energy, on the other hand, produces no air pollution, no water pollution, and no greenhouse gasses. In fact, solar electric systems are one of the cleanest power-generating technologies available.
When you work with California Clean Energy, you’ll generate significant environmental benefits:
Reduce Global Warming
A by-product of burning fossil fuels is carbon dioxide, a major contributor to global warming, which is impacting climates around the world. Global warming is causing a rise in sea levels, which is leading to a loss of coastal wetlands, erosion of shorelines, and increased flooding in coastal areas. Climate shifts also have severe impacts on ecosystems and agriculture. Solar systems do not cause emissions of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases. |

Reduce Sulfur Dioxide and Nitrogen Oxide Emissions
Burning fossil fuels generates a number of air pollutants, including sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. Both of these toxins adversely affect breathing and aggravate existing respiratory and cardiovascular disease, which impacts children, the elderly, asthmatics, and people with bronchitis or emphysema. Sulfur dioxide is also a primary contributor to acid rain, which causes acidification of lakes and streams and can damage trees, crops, historic buildings, and statues. Additionally, sulfur and nitrogen oxide compounds in the air contribute to smog in most of the country. Solar power systems produce no air pollution while operating. |

Reduce Mercury Emissions
Another toxin emitted by burning coal is mercury. Airborne mercury can find its way into water supplies, where it can build up in fish and animals that eat fish, including humans. Mercury is highly toxic when inhaled or swallowed, and exposure can permanently damage the brain, kidneys, and developing fetuses. Solar power systems produce no mercury while operating. |
